Following in the footsteps of Ngaoundéré, Garoua is the host of this year’s university games, bringing together athletes from Cameroon’s various universities.
On the morning of Wednesday May 22 2024, a bus carrying students from the University Institute of Science and Technology in Yaounde on its way to Garoua skidded off the Mbé cliff, 40 kilometers from the city center of Ngaoundéré.
According to reports from eye witnesses, the bus lost control of its brakes on the way down the cliff, skidded and hit a balustrade below. Cameroun tribune reported several serious injuries without loss of life.
The governor of the Adamawa region, Kildadi Taguieke Boukar, who was present on the scene of the accident, is expected to announce the official outcome. In the meantime, the injured students are being attended to at the Ngaoundere Regional hospital.
This event has instilled fear in the hearts of the athletes who are due to start the competition on May 25.
