-The third day of the Douala 24 African Senior Athletics Championships was marked by the first events of the women’s heptathlon, in which four competitors competed: Benin’s Odile AHOUANWANOU, Tunisia’s Nada Chaoudi, South Africa’s Shannon Verster and Cameroon’s Adèle Mafogang. The high jump and 110m hurdles were on the programme, with the rest to follow on Tuesday.

-Other events also attracted attention, in particular the women’s 4 x 100m, where Team Cameroon was disqualified for poor baton passing and the fall of an athlete.

It should be noted that Nigeria’s Ashley Anumba achieved a performance of 59.30 m in the discus throw, while her compatriot Chukwjebuka Enekwechi stood out in the men’s shot put, even though he was the only athlete present at the medal ceremony. His two Egyptian rivals, Mostafa Hassan and Mohamed Khalifa, who won the silver and bronze medals respectively, refused to appear on the podium to receive theirs, as they were unhappy with the organisation.

Cameroon’s Laura EYIKE came 4th in the high jump.

The 800m hurdles saw a Botswana double with Victor NTWENG, while the 3,000m steeplechase was dominated by the Ugandans, a discipline that many spectators and television viewers discovered.

The programme for Monday 24 June 2024 includes a mid-term evaluation meeting of the African Athletics Championships, chaired by the Minister of Sport and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, in the multipurpose hall of the Governor’s Office at 3pm. The events will resume at 3pm.

This is an important meeting, given that since the start of the competition, a number of athletes from other countries have been criticising the organisation, which they consider to be deplorable, as in the case of Ivorian Marie Josée Ta Lou.
