Indeed, performances in Africa vary. Cameroon, for example, moved up two places. Under Marc Brys, the team picked up 4 important points in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers thanks to its victory over Cabo Verde (4-1) and its draw with Angola (1-1).
As a result, Cameroon moved up from 51st to 49th place in Football-Ranking’s projections for the new FIFA rankings, dropping from 9th to 8th place in Africa. By beating Cape Verde 4-1, the Indomitable Lions regained top spot in their group despite the draw in Luanda.
This success, despite the internal tensions between Fécafoot president Samuel Eto’o and coach Marc Brys, is a convincing performance, although the situation remains tense.
Surprises in the African Zone
In the FIFA rankings, Mali fell significantly, dropping six places. South Africa rose slightly, while nations such as Ghana moved up four places.
Morocco continues to dominate African football, maintaining its position as the top African country. With a total of 1669.44 points, the Kingdom of Morocco has consolidated its place among the elite of world football, recording a slight increase of 8.02 points on the previous ranking.
Despite a slight drop of one place in the world rankings, Senegal maintains a strong position in Africa, coming second with 1623.34 points. Meanwhile, Egypt moved up one place to third place with 1502.33 points, demonstrating a solid performance in recent months.
However, not all countries experienced an upward trajectory. Nigeria, despite its well-established reputation in African football, has slipped significantly in the FIFA rankings, falling eight places to 38th. Similarly, Côte d’Ivoire, although currently fourth, has also dropped down the world rankings.
